Finishing My Book and Reflections

I have now finished the book, "The Road From Morocco", by the author, Wafa Faith Hallam. It is amazing to myself, how the experiences of the mother's life have dramatically impacted the daughter, who is also the author, and made her stronger. The torment that her mother experienced throughout her life caused the daughter to look after everybody else's needs to her own detriment. She was constantly in a position to look after and care for others to make up for what her mother had to go through.  It took a lifetime for her to learn that her mothers past needed to be addressed and accepting in order for her to have positive relationship with her own daughter. Her journey allowed her to see the world for what it was and not pass judgement where egos and materials success were predominant.   This journey is summarized by Gandhi's statement, "You must be the change you want to see in the world." As I continue to read my novel. I have been doing research and reading articles and finding other sources to go along with the themes of the book. Halfway Through My Book

I am approximately halfway through my book for my semester long project. The book, "The Road From Morocco", so far has been an excellent novel that describes the struggle and journey of a girl's mother who was forced into marriage. The book does a really great job of illustrating the issues of pre-arranged marriage and more specifically gender equality. The book is in the point of view of the daughter of the mother, Saadia, and she explains in great depth about how her mother struggled with the issues of gender equality and being forced to do things that she didn't want to do. The way in which the author, Wafa Faith Hallam, writes and tells the story of her mother is really powerful and you almost feel like you are attached to the story in some way. So far, I have really enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it to other students as well as friends and family for a intriguing and educational read. Semester Long Project Conclusion

My group and I have put our chalkboards that we created, in the learning commons of the school, to promote the issue of gender equality. We decorated them with colourful chalk and made them look attractive so that they would get attention. We then put up posters and flyers up around the school, to encourage students to write what they feel about the issue of gender equality on our chalkboards. Our chalkboards were put on on January the 8th and will continue to be up until January the 17th. Many students and teachers have already started to write on our chalkboards, and they are starting to look like what we imagined before starting this project. I find it really touching and interesting to see what other people feel about this topic. I am so happy and thrilled that my group and I accomplished this project because it gave the people of St. Francis High School the opportunity to share what they think and how they feel about a topic that our current world struggles with. Building Our Chalkboard

Today, we went to the shop classroom and started to construct our chalkboard from the materials that we had recently purchased at Home Depot. We first decided how big our board was going to be. As a team we came to the conclusion that we would cut our large board into two boards and then attach them to make one large board, when we were done preparing them. The first thing we did to prepare our chalkboard was apply the primer specifically made for the chalkboard paint that we purchased. We split up our group and worked on applying the primer to our boards of plywood. After the primer was dry, we then started to apply the chalkboard paint. We got some tips from the shop teacher and learned that we needed to all paint in the same direction on the board and we had to do several coats for the paint to successfully turn into a chalkboard. Purchasing Our Materials For Our Semester Long Project

On Monday, November the 27th, Mrs. Ponce, three of my other group members and I went to Home Depot after school to purchase the necessary materials for our semester long project. The first material we needed to purchase was the board that we would turn into a chalkboard, for students of St. Francis to write on. We went to the plywood section and found a very large piece of sanded plywood. The piece of sanded plywood, however was too large to fit in any of the vehicles we came in, so we called and arranged for somebody who had a truck to come and pick it up for us. The second material we need to purchase was the chalkboard paint and primer to apply to our board. We did not know what type of paint and primer were ideal for our project, so we got help and direction from a Home Depot employee. The employee at Home Depot was very helpful and guided us to the correct products. After we got our paint and primer we then got the paint brushes needed to apply the paint and primer to our board. ...

Taking The Next Step In Our Semester Long Project.

As a group, we have finalized our idea to put up large chalk boards in the main foyer of the school, with the words "gender equality" on them. When the boards are in the foyer, people can freely come up to them write what gender equality means to them. A few weeks ago, we all answered certain questions about our semester long projects to apply for funding for our materials. We were approved and we received six hundred dollars to put towards are projects as a class. The organization came into the class and presented us with a check for six hundred dollars. We then took pictures for their website and social media! Now that we have the money to go through with our project, the next step is to buy the materials. With the help of Mrs. Ponce, we decided that a couple of people in our group, including myself, are going to purchase the materials at Home Depot after school on Monday.
