Starting my book!
I started to read my book that pertains to gender equality in Morocco. The book I'm reading is called "The Road from Morocco" and is written by the author "Wafa Faith Hallam". I read the prologue and the first chapter of the book and already I am moved by the story. The book is about Wafa Faith Hallam. She was born and raised in Morocco where she struggled through the issues of gender equality. The book tells the story about her mother's arranged marriage and the hardships she endured as a young mother to her daughter Hallam. The book recounts Saadia's illness, and Hallam's mental collapse and her subsequent spiritual awakening. In the prologue she explains how she felt the need to write about her mother's story and how her life would be unfulfilled if she did not put the story to paper. Chapter 1 starts by explaining Hallam's mother's wedding night when she is forced to marry a man and than have his child, even though she strongly did not want to. At the time, her mother was 13 years old while the groom was 33 years old. The book describes her mother weeping and even wishing she would die, so that she would not have to go through with the marriage. In one paragraph it explains that she cried day and night and even contemplated running away a few times, but in the end she could only submit to her destiny. As explained in the book, one of the only things that made this arrangement bearable for her mother was that she lived in the company of many other women in the house, who served the men. By the time her mother was sixteen, her marriage took on its full significance only after she became pregnant with me and everything she had known suddenly changed. So far this book has already opened my eyes to arranged marriages and how important gender equality really is in the world.
