A Change Of Plan...

Time for a change!!!!!  While my selected issue of gender inequality has not changed, my individual project has become a group project. Today's class started with Mrs. Ponce putting us in groups with people who are researching similar issues about their countries and SDGs. I was put in the gender equality group and after some discussions realized that the people our group identified similar issues and topics and were contemplating similar types of awareness campaigns.  Working together made lots of sense!  Strength in numbers!  We started the class by researching many different ideas to bring awareness to such a serious issue. We came up with many possible ideas such as posters, flyers, bookmarks, a coffee house and even a social experiment. After discussing with each other and getting some needed advice we narrowed our awareness campaign down to two possible selections. The first possible awareness campaign would be a vote conducted at the school. The question for t...

Getting Started On Instagram

I decided to create my Instagram account to promote and bring awareness to the issue of gender inequality.  The first thing I accomplished was creating a Instagram handle that would be intriguing and would make people want to click on my account. I looked are many different names, such as "promoting gender equality", "gender equality", "men and women are equal", as well as "a human is a human". After some reflection and consideration I decided to select "men and women are equal", because I felt that this Instagram handle would not only make people intrigued with my Instagram page, but also will show up in many different search results, even if they are not searching for gender equality pages.  Now that my Instagram page is set up, the next step for my project is to determine ways which I can promote gender equality outside of Instagram which will really make a difference to helping create awareness and action to change gender inequality...

Researching How To Use Social Media Effectively

Today, I decided, for my semester long project I am going to be using Instagram to help raise awareness and put a stop to gender inequalities in Morocco. One way in which I researched to effectively use Instagram was to use the tools available on the platform. One tool that I can use on Instagram is to make my account a "business" account where I can list my school email so I can answer questions and or concerns that people have about gender inequalities. Another effective way in which I can promote gender equality is to use hashtags effectively. Hashtags, if used correctly, will help other people find my account and bring more awareness to the issue of gender inequality. To create strong hashtags I can use the S.T.R.I.C.T rule, where the S stands for specific, the T stands for target, the R stands for relevant, the I stands for innovative, the C stands for concise, and the last T stands for thoughtful. Making hashtags with these rules is a very effective way to promote gende...

First Blog: The Start Of A Plan

Today, I started to research problems that I can bring awareness to for my semester long project. I started with researching social and environmental problems in Morocco, Barbados, and Kazakhstan. I read about gender equality in Morocco. Even though Morocco has adopted certain laws promoting gender equality, Moroccan women are still treated more poorly then Moroccan men, often because judges are finding ways around these protective laws. I also read about the problem of human trafficking in Kazakhstan. Traffickers target young girls and women, luring them with promises of employment as waitresses, models, or babysitters in large cities. The government of Kazakhstan has increased spending for human trafficking awareness campaigns and  has adopted laws to allow funding for long term shelters and services for victims of human trafficking. That being said, police officers still are not conducting proper investigations and the government is not prosecuting many criminals. I also read ab...
